A Gauteng teacher has handed himself over to police in connection with allegations that he raped a pupil.
The 38-year-old Umqhele Secondary School teacher is accused of raping the 16-year old pupil on the school premises in Ivory Park, Midrand on Friday.
On Wednesday morning, police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo confirmed that the teacher had handed himself over.
“A 38-year-old suspect who allegedly raped a 16-year-old learner inside the school premises in Ivory Park handed himself over to the police on Wednesday morning. He is expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, facing a charge of rape,” Masondo said.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson in Gauteng, Phindi Louw, confirmed that the teacher would appear in court on Thursday.
The Gauteng Department of Education became aware of the rape allegations when the case was reported to its district office last week, News24 previously reported.
The department has availed its psycho-social unit to provide psychological support to the affected pupil and those close to her. The department said it had started disciplinary processes against the alleged perpetrator.
“As the Gauteng Department of Education, we will never tolerate nor condone any sexual relations or harassment of learners by educators and any of our officials. We will never allow educators or officials to abuse the privilege, given to us by millions of parents across the province, of providing care to all young people in our education system,” said Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi.
“We reiterate our absolute faith in the South African justice system and believe that anyone found on the wrong side of the law will face full consequences,” he added.
