Singer and reality star Kelly Khumalo has asked the South African Music Awards (Samas) to remove her from the nominees list via a tweet on 19 May.
The nominees list for the 27th annual Samas were announced on 19 May with Tweeps hitting the Twitter streets to weigh in on the choice of nominations. From praising Kabza De Small’s six nomination lead to criticising Boity for her 4436 album nod, Tweeps had a lot to say.
Kelly Khumalo, however, seemed to be unhappy with her own nomination. The Empini hitmaker was nominated in the “Best Afro Pop Album” for her album Voice of Africa alongside Azana for Ingoma, Manu Worldstar for Molimo, Vusi Nova for Ngumama and Simmy for Tugela Fairy: Made of Stars.
The Life with Kelly Khumalo star humble asked the Samas to remove her nomination.
“Dear @TheSAMAs I humbly ask that you remove my work out of whatever category you might have nominated me for. As much as I respect what you do, I also ask that you respect my hard work and effort. #TheVoiceOfAfrica @UMGSA,” wrote Khumalo.
Although the singer did not give a reason for why she wanted her nomination removed, she dropped a hint that she felt disrespected. She thereafter replied to a Tweeps response saying “How dare they insult my hard work like that!”
TWITTER REACTS TO KELLY’S REQUEST
The Twitter streets had mixed reactions to Kelly Khumalo asking to be removed from the nominees list.
Some Tweeps were upset that her song Empini was not nominated.
Another Tweep criticised Khumalo for submitting her work.
BRIBERY AND CORRUPTION?
Some Tweeps also shared their thoughts on possible bribery and corruption.
“Yesterday I was stunned when I heard that Kelly khumalo asked for the SAMAs to remove all her nominations, now I gotta think, why would she do that? Yes of course they probably asking her to pay them money so she could win. A whole legend like Kelly pulling out of the SAMAs?” wrote @Stenfordm1.
Talk of corruption within the prestigious awards claims were fueled when fans found out that chart-topping star Makhadzi was snubbed from the nominations. She responded to this, saying she did fill out the forms, but thinks she may have not met the requirements.
