Growing up abroad is an experience many people never get to experience and for some, it’s an experience they wish they would forget.

Growing up as a black child of mixed race in countries dominated by caucasians comes with its own challenges with racism topping the list.

1. Victoria Rubadiri

The celebrated Citizen TV host went to the US at age 10 and stayed there for 15 years.

Rubadiri who is born to a Malawian dad said she had a hard time trying to fit in.

2. Chero Oywa

The bubbly TV host lived in the US for 18 years before she decided to come back home. She is best known for hosting an entertainment show dubbed ‘Straight Up.’

She was born in Bomet but raised in the US.

3. Joy Kendi

Kendi grew up after her mum got a chance to go to the US to pursue her PHD.

Being a single mum of two, Kendi’s mum tagged her along with the sister. She is among the most followed fashion bloggers.

 

4. Lupita Nyongo

Nyong’o, was born in Mexico City.

Growing up she faced a lot of racism to an extent of people wanting to take photos of her while on the streets.

But that did not dim her light.

Today, she is an Oscar award winner and a celebrated international actress.

5. Victoria Kimani

Victoria who is sister to Kenyan artiste Bamboo was born in Torrance, California.

She grew up in the US but her family left the US when she was 14 and went to live in Nigeria.
